It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The holiday season has arrived and as the end of the year approaches it’s time to show your appreciation to your clients, suppliers and employees.
Here are a few things to remember when it comes to Corporate Gifting :
1. Be mindful of Corporate Policies
Before giving any gifts to suppliers or clients check their corporate policy regarding gifts. Some workplaces may forbid employees from accepting gifts from customers or clients, resulting in the employee having to decline or return the gift. However, most workplaces should allow employees to accept gifts under a certain value, usually stated as a nominal value. Corporate Policies can usually be found online but if in doubt always ask and never assume.
2. No gifts to potential clients or vendors
As a rule of thumb avoid gifting any business associates who are currently engaging in negotiations with your firm. Gifting potential vendors or clients could be seen as a form of bribery or an attempt at influencing their decision to provide or conduct business with your firm.
3. Avoid individual gifts to your boss
Showing your appreciation to your boss is something that should not be done alone. Avoid giving an individual gift to your boss and opt for a group gift from the entire department. An individual gift may cause unnecessary tension and jealousy within your department as your co-workers may think you are trying to win your boss’ favour with gifts. A group gift gives employees within a department a chance to collaborate and show their appreciation as team.
4. Always give a gift to your assistant
If you are in middle or higher management chances are you have an assistant or secretary. You should always be thankful to your support staff and a holiday gift is a great way to show your appreciation. Keep it professional and avoid gifts such as perfume/cologne or clothing which may be too personal; opt for something more general such as a bottle of wine, a book or a gift certificate. Although you work closely with your assistant aim to maintain a professional relationship, you do not want your gift to convey the wrong idea.
5. Put your name on it
When giving corporate gifts to clients and vendors make sure your company name and logo are visible on the gift. You want clients to be able to associate your company with the gift so opting for customized corporate gifts is recommended. Customized gifts can be expensive but look for quality over price.
If you do not have a customized gift include a card along with your gift and identify yourself and your company. Sending your business card along with the gift is another way of establishing brand presence and recognition. Corporate gifts are an extension of your company and you should always strive to make the best impression even when it comes to showing your appreciation!
